Microdosing and Macrodosing: Definitions, Evidence, and Regulation

Public discussion often uses “microdosing” and “macrodosing” as if they were standardized medical categories. They are not. Microdosing generally refers to low amounts intended to produce minimal perceptual change, while macrodosing refers to larger amounts associated with clearly altered perception. Potency varies across mushroom species, preparations, and batches, so these terms do not guarantee a predictable effect.

What the evidence supports

Research on psilocybin-assisted therapy is developing, but findings from supervised clinical studies should not be generalized to unsupervised consumer use. Evidence specifically about microdosing remains limited and mixed. Placebo-controlled studies have reported both measurable effects and null findings, and reviews continue to identify small samples, expectancy effects, inconsistent methods, and a shortage of long-term safety data.

Canada’s current legal position

Psilocybin and psilocin are controlled substances in Canada. Production, sale, and possession are illegal unless authorized by Health Canada. Current legal access routes can include authorized clinical trials, practitioner-led requests through the Special Access Program, and case-specific exemptions. These pathways are limited and should not be described as general legalization.

What a future regulated market may require

If Canadian policy changes, a credible framework would likely focus on verified identity, standardized testing, traceable manufacturing, accurate labelling, age controls, adverse-event reporting, and clear separation between consumer products and authorized therapeutic use. The exact model, timing, and permitted product formats remain uncertain.
